Holland America's Volendam Sets Sail on 28-Night Iceland and Greenland Voyage

Volendam's 28-Night Iceland & Greenland Cruise

Holland America Line's Volendam departed Boston in late June on a month-long, 28-night cruise taking in Canada, Iceland and Greenland. The sailing forms part of the line's Legendary Voyages series and calls at 15 ports across the three regions before the ship returns to Boston in late July.

A Route Built Around Remote Ports

Rather than sticking to the more familiar Nordic cruise stops, the itinerary leans into destinations that rarely appear on mainstream sailing schedules. Guests will call at Heimaey in Iceland's Westman Islands, the small Icelandic town of Djupivogur, and the French overseas territory of Saint Pierre et Miquelon off the Canadian coast.

Greenland features prominently too, with visits to the southern towns of Nanortalik and Qaqortoq. In Iceland, the Volendam also stops at Isafjord in the Westfjords, the northern hub of Akureyri, and the capital, Reykjavik. Rounding out the Canadian leg are calls at Portland, Sydney, St. John's, Corner Brook, Iles de la Madeleine and Halifax.

Three of these stops — St. John's, Reykjavik and Halifax — are overnight calls, giving passengers extra time ashore to explore beyond a typical day-trip window.

What "Legendary Voyages" Means Onboard

Holland America positions its Legendary Voyages as more than a point-to-point itinerary, building destination-led programming into the sailing itself. The line describes the format as pairing onboard ceremony with the scale of the journey, and the Volendam's schedule includes destination-themed parties, string ensemble performances and presentations tied to the ports being visited.

Where the Volendam Goes Next

Once the Iceland and Greenland voyage wraps up, the 1999-built ship moves into a summer season of shorter sailings around Canada and New England, with seven- to 14-night departures from Boston and Montreal running through the autumn.

From there, the Volendam repositions to New York in early October for another Legendary Voyage: a 45-night roundtrip crossing to the Mediterranean and Western Europe, with port calls planned in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Malta and Tunisia.

The ship's calendar continues into a month-long Amazon sailing and a 14-night Caribbean cruise, before it takes on Holland America's Grand World Voyage, a 129-night cruise sailing roundtrip from Fort Lauderdale in early January 2027, calling at ports across South America, the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean and Africa.

Why This Itinerary Stands Out

For travellers weighing up a polar or Arctic-adjacent cruise, the Volendam's routing offers a mix of well-known capitals and genuinely off-the-beaten-path stops that are harder to reach independently. The overnight calls in particular give more flexibility for excursions, late dinners ashore, or simply a slower pace in ports that many ships only visit for a few hours.

If you have been eyeing up a dreamy fly-cruise to the Caribbean or a winter-sun getaway to the Gulf of Mexico, the latest weather outlook offers some reassuring news. According to a recent report by Cruise Industry News , the resurgence of a powerful El Niño climate pattern is expected to suppress storm activity this year. Infact, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released its official forecast for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, predicting a 55% chance of a below-average season . Thanks to the return of a robust El Niño climate pattern, holidaymakers looking to trade the unpredictable British summer for tropical shores can look forward to a significantly quieter atmospheric backdrop. What the 2026 Forecast Actually Means for Your Holiday For British travellers planning high-season or late-summer voyages, weather patterns are always a top consideration. While a typical Atlantic season averages 14 named storms, meteorologists are predicting a much gentler outlook this year. What is El Niño? This global climate phenomenon involves the warming of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. For the Atlantic basin—which covers the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the open Atlantic—El Niño acts as a natural dampener, creating hostile high-altitude winds (wind shear) that actively tear apart tropical storms before they can develop into major hurricanes. The Floating Resort Advantage: Why You’re Safe at Sea Even with a quieter forecast, tropical weather can naturally fluctuate between the official season kickoff and its conclusion on 30 November , with the historical peak hitting in early September. However, cruise industry insiders, including major players like Carnival Cruise Line, are reminding guests that a cruise ship holds a unique advantage over a static beach resort: it can simply move out of the way. Unlike land-based hotels, modern cruise ships operate as floating resorts equipped with cutting-edge navigation and tracking systems. Here is how cruise lines keep your holiday safe and seamless: 24/7 Operations Hubs: Teams of dedicated maritime experts and meteorologists monitor global weather systems around the clock from state-of-the-art fleet control centers. Proactive Rerouting: Captains receive real-time atmospheric updates, allowing them to adjust itineraries days in advance and steer ships into calm, safe waters. Instant Updates: If a tropical system means swapping a port call in the Western Caribbean for a sunny hidden gem in the Bahamas, itinerary changes are communicated directly to passengers immediately. Key Takeaway While no meteorologist will ever promise a completely storm-free season, the 2026 data indicates that the odds are heavily in favour of smoother sailings. Whether you're booking a family-friendly mega-ship or an intimate boutique voyage, you can lock in that tropical itinerary with an extra layer of confidence this year.
